The Netzwerk Naturwissen at the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin used the Global Climate Strike on the 3rd of March as an opportunity to present the moving documentary "Outcry of the Youth". Produced at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic has pushed the climate crisis out of the headlines, the film is a powerful portrait of the youth movement Fridays for Future. Director Kathrin Pitterling offers an authentic insight into the dynamics of the movement, capturing both the highs and the challenges faced by young activists.
The screening was followed by an intensive dialogue between Pitterling, two representatives of Fridays for Future - Willi Schwope and Louis Motaal - and Timothée Ingen-Housz of the Netzwerk Naturwissen. The discussion shed light on the influence of imagery and public perception on environmental and socio-political issues. Participants shared their insights on how innovative narratives and creative forms of protest can raise awareness and inspire action, asking: How do images work here, and what is the significance of their public perception on burning social and political issues? What new stories can be told to inspire action?
Ingen-Housz, an expert in communicating complex issues, highlighted the potential of different media formats to communicate sustainable messages. Schwope and Motaal, both experienced activists featured in the film, shared their experiences and views on strategies to raise awareness despite the constraints imposed by the pandemic.
